Every year, Dougie Mac provides hospice services free of charge to adults and children living with a life-limiting illness in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.
Brada Developments was therefore focused on undertaking this project with the greatest care and speed to ensure that this amazing facility became available as soon as possible – and thankfully, the ward was ready for re-opening as planned!
A significant part of the refurbishment works involved the complete overhaul of the existing, glazed roof. This operation was not helped by the unusually wet summer months and managing unseasonably high volumes of rainwater was challenging! However, a new and more robust roof was installed which contained electrically operated roof lights complete with rain sensors. The new roof also performed better in terms of limiting solar gain, an issue that historically made the environment uncomfortably warm.
In addition to the roofing works, the scheme involved a number of modifications to the electrical installations, including new energy efficient LED lighting, modifications to the fire and smoke detection systems as well as various aspects of small power installations.
Finally, installation of safety flooring throughout and decoration to the newly plastered walls provided the finishing touches to ensure the ward has a warm and welcoming feel for the staff and patients.
It was a privilege to work for such a worthy organisation as Dougie Mac and Brada, along with architects Wood Goldstraw & Yorath are pleased that the scheme has been a success, providing vital care to patients in need for many years to come.
